Who’s the We?

Who’s the We? follows Minneapolis pastor and activist Doug Pagitt as he leads a small group of cyclists on a 66-day journey along the U.S.–Mexico border and across the Gulf Coast to St. Augustine, Florida. Riding 50 to 60 miles a day through desert heat, storms, traffic, and mechanical breakdowns, Doug insists on experiencing the border “on the ground,” convinced that immigration cannot be understood from a distance.

Along the way, the riders meet migrants, volunteers, aid workers, and border residents whose experiences complicate the stories many Americans have been told about immigration. The journey reaches its most volatile point in Eagle Pass, Texas, where Doug and the riders encounter a Christian nationalist “Save Our Borders” convoy and competing visions of faith, nationhood, and belonging collide.

Set against the stark beauty of the borderlands and the long roads that connect them, Who’s the We? is both a road film and a moral investigation—asking how fear shapes the stories Americans tell about one another, and who is included when we say “We the People.”
