I’m a filmmaker interested in the strange, revealing stories that emerge when people become deeply committed to what they believe. Much of my work lives somewhere between science, belief, and storytelling, in both fiction and nonfiction.

I co-directed the documentaries The Atom Smashers, about the search for the Higgs boson; The Believers, about the 1989 cold-fusion controversy; and We Believe in Dinosaurs, about the creation of a life-sized Noah’s Ark theme park in Kentucky. The Atom Smashers and We Believe in Dinosaurs were broadcast on PBS’s Independent Lens.

My fiction work includes supernatural, science-fiction, historical, and dramatic shorts, including Galileo’s Grave and Pere Marquette.

My films have screened internationally and received awards including the Chicago International Film Festival’s Gold Hugo, the Pariscience Audacity Award, and documentary prizes at the Maryland and St. Louis International Film Festivals.

I teach filmmaking at Northwestern University, where I’m a Professor of Instruction in Radio/Television/Film.
